Can vegetarians survive in Mongolia?

1. In Cities like Ulaanbaatar

Restaurants: Ulaanbaatar, the capital, has a growing number of restaurants catering to vegetarians and vegans, including international cuisines like Indian, Korean, and Western.

Groceries: Supermarkets in cities carry a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, and imported vegetarian-friendly products.

2. In Rural Areas

Rural Mongolia has limited vegetarian options as the diet revolves around livestock and dairy products.

However, staples like bread (boortsog), rice, potatoes, and basic vegetables (like cabbage and carrots) are often available.

Traditional dairy products (if you're not vegan) can supplement your diet, including yogurt, cheese, and fermented drinks.

3. Planning Ahead

Bring Essentials: If traveling extensively in rural areas, it’s wise to pack non-perishable vegetarian staples like nuts, seeds, protein bars, and dehydrated meals.

Communicate Dietary Needs: Learn basic Mongolian phrases to explain your dietary restrictions (e.g., “Bi makh iddeggui” – "I don't eat meat").

4. Cultural Considerations

Vegetarianism is not widely understood in rural areas, and declining meat can be seen as unusual or even rude in traditional hospitality. Being prepared to politely explain or navigate these situations is important.
